Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame nearly had a fight scene involving Black Panther’s Okoye (Danai Gurira) and Thor: Ragnarok’s Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) using each other’s weapons on the film’s many baddies. While that scene never made it into Avengers: Endgame, the film did feature an all-woman team-up in the big fight scene with Thanos and his army toward the end, though it was very brief. The proposed scene was also not the only big scene axed, as Sean Gunn revealed that the final battle almost included an elaborate aerial sequence.

Avengers: Endgame featured a lot of conclusion points for certain characters, like Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and presumably Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. But it also painted a picture of what the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could look like in the hands of some promising newcomers. Among those are Okoye and Valkyrie, two characters who made names for themselves among fans in their respective films. With the latter now King of Asgard and a fierce warrior in her own right and the former a general in Wakanda, the original idea of teaming them up almost seems like a no-brainer.

During the D23 Expo 2019 event, it was revealed that there originally was an idea for Okoye and Valkyrie to use each other’s weapons in the big battle of Avengers: Endgame. This would have illustrated that both women were so skilled at combat, that their choice in weapon would not matter. Twitter user harmony/pin if unf posted a photo of concept art of what that potential scene would have looked like in the film. For a look at the tweet, see below:

It’s more than a little odd that the decision was made to cut the scene from Avengers: Endgame, especially considering the fact that so much of the final act was dedicated to a similar action sequence involving Captain America and Thor swapping Mjölnir and Stormbreaker during the big battle with Thanos. Would it have been much of an issue to cut down on that scene and add even a small sequence involving Okoye and Valkyrie? Honestly, there’s no way to know now what could have been, but it seems like a big missed opportunity to further highlight future stars of the MCU.

On the other hand, two big weapon swap fights in the same movie might have seemed repetitive to those involved in the film, and focusing on Captain America finally lifting Mjolnir was a monumental moment in the franchise. With Avengers: Endgame focusing primarily on the “original Avengers” from the 2012 film, it was also probably the right move from a narrative standpoint. Still, it’s hard not to imagine how awesome such a sequence from two compelling and powerful new characters would have been in establishing their importance to the future of the MCU.
